So you've just bought your hamster, Congratulations good decision!
I know in my experience they picked up by skin area by the neck (don't worry this is the natural way of the mother picking its young up so don't be shocked)
In my case the hamster was given to me in a small cardboard container just like this one:

It could be different in your case depending on your pet shop entirely. It is important when carrying your hamster that you support the box and keep it balanced, to not cause any extra distress for the hamster.
Note: Remember to poke the air holes through and keep the box level to avoid stress.
When removing your hamster from the box slowly undo the clips at one end and place it in horizontally in the cage and give your hamster time to remove itself from the box so keep those fingers away!
Its probably a good job that hamsters don't suffer from Clostaphobia otherwise we would be in trouble!
Its not a good idea to touch you hamster while you transport your hamster from any holes or gaps. Most hamsters are very frightened and they could bite in self defence, this applies especially for Syrian hamsters.
