Hamster breeds

Hamsters come in lots of different breeds stretching from popular Syrian's to small Roborovskii, there's lots of species out there all sharing similarities, but all with a little uniqueness.

You can find out all you need to know about specific hamster species they all can vary in shape colour and size regardless of the breed so they can be easily mistaken.

Soon we hope to have specific details on a different hamster types. The most common breeds that need a quick mention are listed here:

 

- Syrian Hamster

Appearance:

Different colours, commonly white under belly.

Characteristics:

Lively & robust; easily tamed; solitary - females in particular are more aggressive towards each other.

- Golden Hamster

Appearance:

Size: 15-20 cm
The original wild color of the Syrian Hamster. Golden-brown in co lour with white under parts.

Characteristics:

Lively & robust; easily tamed; solitary - females in particular are more aggressive towards each other.

- Cream-colored Hamster

Appearance:

An early mutation of the Syrian Hamster. Even beige color; the under parts somewhat are paler

Characteristics:

Lively; becomes friendly quick, also even tempered.

- Teddy Hamster
(Longhaired Syrian Hamster)

Appearance:

Longhaired has silky, shiny fur; Males have longer fur than females.

Characteristics:

Becomes friendly quickly; longhaired needs to be groomed with a toothbrush.

- Albino Syrian
(Flesh Eared White or Synthetic Albino)

Appearance:

Mutation of Syrian Hamster although they are not "true albinos". White all over with pink-red eyes.

Characteristics:

Lively & robust; easily tamed; solitary - females in particular are more aggressive towards each other.

 

- Banded Syrian Hamster

Appearance:

Pattern mutation of the Syrian Hamster. White band over centre of body and white belly.

Characteristics:

Lively & robust; easily tamed; solitary - females in particular are more aggressive towards each other.

- Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster
(Dungaree or Siberian)

Appearance:

Size: 8-10 cm
Has dark gray fur with dark markings on nose, ears, tail, and feet; has a black stripe that runs from between the ears down to the tail; more delicate than wild-type golden hamsters, can turn white in winter

Characteristics:

Becomes tame quickly; gets along with others of its kind; limited vision.

Dwarf Hamster

 

- Dwarf Russian Hamster
(Campbell's)

Appearance:

Size: 10-12 cm
Mid gray with a dark gray stripe from between the ears to the tail; white belly and slightly cream on the sides; has black eyes

Characteristics:

It is sociable and will live with other hamsters of its own kind.

- Albino Dwarf Campbell's Russian Hamster

Appearance:

Size: 10-12 cm
A mutation of the Dwarf Campbell's Russian. Pure white with red eyes.

Characteristics:

It's good-natured, even toward others of its kind.

- Dwarf Hamster
(Chinese)

Appearance:

Size: 11-12 cm
Young have gray, older animals have brownish, thick, and soft fur; dark stripe down the back from forehead to tail

Characteristics:

Young animals become tame easily, older ones only rarely; timid; lives with others with its own kind butfemales are aggressive toward the males.
